How it works

Reference, template, export.

Three stages, in this order. The app uses the same three words, so what you learn here is what you will see on screen.

    Upload the edit you want to borrow the timing from.

    EditDNA inspects the video, detects the cuts, and measures how long each scene runs. You get a pacing report and a scene strip before you commit to anything.

    The cuts become numbered scene slots.

    Add your own clips, auto-fill the slots, then change any assignment by hand. Each slot keeps the reference’s duration, so the rhythm holds while the footage changes.

Scene length distribution

How many scenes fall into each length band. A tall middle means an even edit; a split means the reference alternates between holds and bursts.

Detection confidence

EditDNA reports how cleanly it found the cuts. When a reference is too dark, too noisy, or cross-dissolved throughout, detection drops to an even split and the report says so. You always see which method produced the strip.

These six names are EditDNA’s own shorthand for a band of average scene lengths. They are not scientific categories and no industry body defines them. Your example reads as Fast Social: Scenes average well under two seconds and cuts land faster than one every two seconds.

  • Sorts by length

    Your clips are ordered by duration and matched to slots of similar duration, longest to longest.

  • Prefers portrait

    Portrait clips are placed first because the output frame is 9:16. Landscape clips still work — they get cropped.

  • Spreads your clips

    Every clip is used once before any clip is used twice, so one file does not end up filling half the edit.

  • Flags what will not fit

    A clip shorter than its slot is marked, and you choose whether it loops or holds its last frame.

Auto-fill does not look at what is inside the frame. There is no subject detection, no scene matching, and no judgement about which shot suits which moment — those calls are yours.

Clip fit

Five ways to seat a clip in the frame.

Your clips will not be the same shape or length as the reference’s scenes. These are the controls that resolve the difference, one slot at a time.

  • Fill

    fitMode: fill

    The clip covers the whole 9:16 frame. Whatever falls outside the frame is cropped away. This is the default.

  • Fit

    fitMode: fit

    The whole clip stays visible inside the frame, with empty bars above and below. Nothing is cropped.

  • Reposition

    focalX / focalY

    Move the crop window when the centre is the wrong place to keep. The frame size never changes, only which part you keep.

  • Loop

    shortClipBehavior: loop

    The clip is shorter than its slot, so it plays again from the start until the slot is full.

  • Freeze end

    shortClipBehavior: freeze

    The clip is shorter than its slot, so its last frame holds until the slot is full.

The default is Fill with a centre crop. Clips are never stretched or squashed — EditDNA only crops, letterboxes, repositions, repeats, or holds. Output is always 1080×1920 at 30 fps.

Read this before you upload anything. It is the part of EditDNA that is easiest to misunderstand.

Upload only what is yours
Use content you own or have permission to use. You are responsible for the rights to every file you upload, reference and clips alike.
EditDNA is not a downloader
It cannot fetch video from TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, or any other platform, and it is not a way around a platform’s terms or a creator’s copyright.
Nothing of the reference ships in your export
No reference audio, footage, frames, transitions, text, effects, colour grade, or motion graphics. Only measured scene timing carries over.
A rhythm is not an identity
EditDNA rebuilds pacing. It does not reproduce another creator’s work, style, voice, or brand, and it will not make your edit theirs.
